How to say sorry in French

• A quick general way to say sorry is pardon or désolé.


• If you want to say "I am sorry about that" then you would translate it as je suis désolé(e). If you have just heard some sad news and you want to express sarrow, like I am sincerely sorry to hear about ..., you would then say je suis sincèrement désolé(e) d'apprendre .....


• If you have bumped into somebody by mistake for instance, you would then apologise saying excusez-moi or excuse-moi if this is a friend of yours.


• If you are having a discussion with somebody and you wish to express a disagreement typically like "I am sorry but I do not agree", you then say je regrette mais je ne suis pas d'accord.
