Walk Brittany

Customers' Reviews
Great walks well presented, this is a consummate guide, by turns informative, thoughtful, entertaining and idiosyncratic. The book is well laid out, with clear maps and consistently good directions which make it easy to follow, just as you would expect. What sets it apart however is Davis' style and approach, there's variety in his walks and an attention to detail that shows he wants you to enjoy them as much as he seems to himself.
Hadn't realized quite how spectacular the Breton coast is until we took a short trip there earlier this summer and were lucky enough to pick up Charles Davis' book in the local supermarket - a bit dearer than on Amazon, of course, but there you go! We did three coastal walks in Finistere and Cotes d'Armor, and two inland walks in Finistere, all of which were excellent. He writes well, the introductions are informative, and the itineraries are clearly described.

Walks in Cotes D'Armor, Northern Brittany (Red Dog Guides)

Customers' Reviews
We went on one of the 36 walks in the book each day (mainly on the coast or town walks) and all were good. If you are looking for a book of walks in this area, I can certainly recommnend this one. The route descriptions are very clear, the maps easy to follow and accurate and the walks themselves well crafted. There is also background information about points of interest along each route.
Simply flicking through this guide book was inspirational. I was immediately attracted to the gradient profiles. I particularly liked the inclusion of - at top and at bottom in the directions. I was pleasantly surprised at the accuracy and clarity of such a small map. With the direction numbers marked it was clear to me precisely where I was. Overall, I found the instructions very easy to follow, the colouring being most useful, the description of the walk, the time, the profile and the level were spot-on. I confidently look forward to using this guide again, soon.

Crossing Brittany: Walking the Nantes-Brest Canal

Product Description
Wendy Mewes' vivid narration of her long walk across Brittany beside the Nantes-Brest canal brings to life the history and landscape of a distinctive region where as many as 20,000 Britons now live. Well-known as a writer about Brittany, this is the author's most personal work to date. Her journey reflects an individual search for identity and raises questions of integration and settlement in a foreign country. Places through which the canal passes prompt further thoughts upon significant characters and events of Breton history. The canal itself, twinned with the Wilts/Berks canal in England, is a leading character in the book. Its story of construction, usage, decline and resurrection as an asset for leisure and tourism is interwoven with observations of the superb natural environment it now provides for flora and fauna. The connective power between man and the landscape fostered by walking is also a theme of this memorable journey.
